This song was first recorded and released by Jackie Lomax in February 1970.

Australian producer David Mackay came up with the melody for the chorus. Songwriters Clive Westlake and David Most completed the song and recorded a demo which was sent among other demos to Freddy Bienstock, the owner of Carlin Music Publishers, who was responsible for selecting songs for Elvis Presley at the time.

Elvis Presley released his version of this track as the B-side of his 1971 single "I Just Can't Help Believin'".
