"Layla" lyrics

"Layla"
("Unplugged" Version)

What will you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long
You know, it's just your foolish pride

Layla, you got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging darling, please
Layla, darling, won't you ease my worried mind?

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down
Like a fool, I fell in love with you
You turned my whole world upside down

Layla, you got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging darling, please
Layla, darling, won't you ease my worried mind?

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain

Layla, you got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging darling, please
Layla, darling, won't you ease my worried mind?
Layla, you got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging darling, please
Layla, darling, won't you ease my worried mind?

Writer(s): Eric Patrick Clapton, Jim Gordon
The title of the song comes from a poem "Layla and Majnun" by the Persian poet Nezami Ganjavi, and Eric Clapton wrote it about Pattie Boyd, George Harrison's wife at the time.
"Layla", "Laylah", or "Leila" mean "night" of "dark beauty" in some of the languages in Middle East.
Pattie Boyd commented, "…I was amazed and thrilled at the song – it was so passionate and devastatingly dramatic…"
The high pitched guitar in the end was played by Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band.
Eric Clapton originally wrote "Layla" as a ballad, but when Duane Allman composed the song's signature riff, the song was recorded in its rock form with the help of producer Tom Dowd.
There is an acoustic version of this song released in 1992 and included on the album "Unplugged". This version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time had this song at number 27 in 2004.
