"Wonderful Tonight" lyrics
"Wonderful Tonight"
It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me, "Do I look all right?"
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."
We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that's walking around with me
And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?"
And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight."
I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don't realize how much I love you
It's time to go home now and I've got an aching head
So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed
And then I tell her, as I turn out the light
I say, "My darling, you were wonderful tonight
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight."
Writer(s): Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton wrote this song while waiting for his girlfriend Pattie Boyd to get ready for a night out because they were going to a
Buddy Holly tribute that
Paul McCartney organized in 1976.
The next day after their wedding, on the 28th of March 1979, Eric Clapton brought Pattie Boyd on stage and sang "Wonderful Tonight" to her at his show in Tucson, Arizona.
There is a live version of this track recorded in London with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and released on his album "24 Nights" (1991).
This song plays in the background while Chandler and Monica are dancing in a TV show Friends in an episode titled "The One With the Proposal".
Eric Clapton made a surprise performance of "Wonderful Tonight" during the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert in 1988, when he was a guest guitarist for
Dire Straits. The group became his backing musicians for this song.
Pattie Boyd said, "For years it tore at me. To have inspired Eric, and George before him, to write such music was so flattering. 'Wonderful Tonight' was the most poignant reminder of all that was good in our relationship, and when things went wrong it was torture to hear it."
