Amy Lee told Radio 1's Rock Show how "Afterlife" came together, "...originally it was supposed to be like an Amy Lee thing, kind of a solo thing, and then as it started growing and building, everyone was like, 'This kind of like sounds like it could be an Evanescence song. Do we wanna do that?' And I was like, 'Yeah, we wanna do that. Let's get the band in here, let's take this all away,' got into a place and then got into a studio with Nick Raskulinecz, who's done our last two records, we got an awesome working relationship, we just got in there together and really hammered it out and took it there together and had a blast." It was Alex Seaver, professionally known as Mako, who first contacted Lee on behalf of Netflix about the collaboration. He co-wrote the song with Lee and Raskulinecz.

This song, which is featured in the soundtrack of "Devil May Cry" Netflix series, was released on the 28th of March, 2025. There's an alternate version of "Afterlife" which appears multiple times in the series.
