Released on the 24th of February 1969, this song reached number 1 on the country music charts, number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the "Easy Listening" charts. It was certified "Gold" in October of the same year.

Don Ho, who originally sung this song, introduced Glen Campbell to it when he appeared as a guest on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour show in 1969. He gave Campbell a copy of the single and told him, "I didn't have any luck with this. Maybe you will."

The original promo video for "Galveston" featured Glen Campbell in a military outfit hinting at the anti-war nature of the song. Jimmy Webb, who wrote it, described it as a song "about a guy who's caught up in something he doesn't understand and would rather be somewhere else". Webb told songfacts.com in 2011, "Glen was very, very good at commercializing my songs.
