"MEAN STREAK" lyrics

"MEAN STREAK"

I was just a blue-jean, flip-flop kid
Listening to LimeWire ripped-off hits
Out there in the pasture
Sittin' in a tractor
Bumpin' that OG hip-hop shit

Maybe that's why my sound these days
Is a J45 on an 808
Yeah, I've always been this way
Nothing's changed

I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak
I'm on that
Get what you see whenever you see me
And aw, well
If you don't like it, take it or leave me
'Cause I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say-and-say-what-I-mean,-mean,-mean streak

Everybody wanna have a word about who
Who I oughta be, what I oughta do
What I gotta play, what I gotta make, what I gotta break just to break through
But I'm done biting my tongue, holding my breath till I pop my lungs
I'm done, I'm done, I'm done

I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak
I'm on that
Get what you see whenever you see me
And aw, well
If you don't like it, take it or leave me
'Cause I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean,-mean,-mean streak

Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak

Yeah, that's why my sound these days
A J45 on an 808
Yeah, I've always been this way
Nothing's changed

I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak
I'm on that
Get what you see whenever you see me
And aw, well
If you don't like it, take it or leave me
'Cause I'm on a
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean,-mean,-mean streak

Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak
Mean-what-I-say,-say-what-I-mean streak

So, look, I grew up in a small town so small it felt shameless
And my mom would drive that Ford forty miles so we'd be educated
Pops was in the field workin' seven days a week
Breaking his back on a tractor tryin' to make a little green

I remember never ordering sodas in the restaurants
So the bills would never go high, so high enough to break the bank accounts
Mamma had two jobs at the church and the school
Always grinding for her baby so we could go on trips with a pool

I never knew nothing more than that town of a hundred
And a lot of you probably didn't know I grew up so country
I've come a long way from that little village
I made it all the way here on someone else's sweat and tears
And so, Father, I'm begging you to hear me

Can you take me higher?
I know there's golden roads
I wanna walk with you, Father
Would you pray for my soul?

I took my Mamma out to Paris on some "Oil Money"
They keep talking but don't listen to their hearts thumping
This world is crazy, and the kids are so confused
I only wanna be a light so the next generation doesn't lose

Sight of why we're all here, more than cigarettes and cold beer
I'm talking 'bout that journey God left for us all to fear

But I gotta trust in my man that one day it will all unfold
And everything we believe in will surly turn to gold

So perk your ears up and listen
I spent a many a nights wondering if these lyrics will ever make it
I moved my whole life here from dirt roads to neon lights
Walking empty streets so drunk I thought I might die
And I know it's kinda so low, so I roll up and get high
Smoke out every thought of never seeing a greater life

Who I am is kinda jaded
But, God, I pray, please don't hate me

Can you take me higher?
I know there's golden roads
I wanna walk with you, Father
Would you pray for my soul?

I've never been one to be cocky or scream, "Listen to my shit"
A wise man once said, "Tread light and carry a big stick"
The less you speak about it, the more it is spoken of
So right now, I am praying I can mean something more to the man up above

And, Mamma, I know you laid awake at night
Praying I wouldn't end up somewhere with no light
But don't think for a second I ain't still got it
Your prayers are finally gonna mean something
I love you and Daddy
Brother, sis, your big bro ain't here to be no phony

For the rest of the world, if you don't know, now you know
It's called Club Country
