This song is the album's third single and it stayed five weeks at the top of the Modern Rock Tracks chart making it their breakout hit.

The song reflects struggles with panic disorder. Billie Joe Armstrong once thought he was going crazy until he was diagnosed with that disease. He explained, "The only way I could know what the hell was going on was to write a song about it."

Billie Joe Armstrong explained in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014 that this song's meaning has changed. He said, "It's about other people now. When I look at people as we play that song, they're having their own moment."

This song starts almost immediately with a verse to take the listener to the core of the song. Tre Cool explained that the first The Beatles album "Please Please Me" was an influence on "Dookie", since the early Beatles songs also got right to the point.
