David Whitfield first recorded this song with the Mantovani Orchestra in 1954. It was the first record to spend ten consecutive weeks at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. The song also became very successful in the USA, and Whitfield was the first ever British male singer who received a Gold Disc award for it.

The title means "my beloved" in Italian.

Jay and the Americans had their hit with "Cara Mia" in 1965, when the song went to number four. Their version was also re-released in the Netherlands in 1980 and topped the country's charts.
