"Ole What's His Name" lyrics

"Ole What's His Name"

He sang at the Ryman back in '61
He wore a big diamond, he was number one
And the people loved the song that he sung
It sure felt good
He bought a bus and he travelled the land
Everyday was a one night stand
Signing pictures for all of his fans
Just like he should, then he said

Darlin' let me hold you for a while
Then he'd hear that Opry crowd go wild
Everything he ever dreamed of
Was finally comin' true
And he wondered where it all was leading to

The music changed but he stayed the same
And little by little he was losing his fame
The fans were even forgetting his name
But he went on
He kept up a front til '72
Then one day he got drunk
And he never got through
And every-time he got to drinkin' that booze
He'd sing that song

Darlin' let me hold you for a while
In his mind he'd hear that Opry crowd go wild
He found a dream in every bottle
But none of them came true
And he never worked at gettin' back in, he was through

The last place I saw him was down on music row
Lord, he was gettin' thin, gettin' old
Searchin' that could put him back on the road
That road he used to ride
Then I heard him singing for tips in a broadway bar
He hand shaked so bad he could hardly play that guitar
But when he sings that song that once made him a star
He's satisfied and he still sings

Darlin' let me hold you for a while
And in his mind he hears that Opry crowd go wild
He found a dream in every bottle
Til all his dreams ran dry
And today I heard that ole what's his name died
