This song was originally written by a singer Billy Roberts in early 1960s. He was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene at that time. Another fellow, Tim Rose, played the song in a slow arrangement, and it was that version that inspired Jimi Hendrix to record the song.

When Jimi Hedley played this track with his then-band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames during a show at the Greenwich Village club Cafe Wha?, Chas Chandler of The Animals was in the audience. He convinced Hendrix to go to London, where he became Jimi's producer and manager. Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell made a group The Jimi Hendrix Experience, recorded "Hey Joe", and released it as a single in the UK in December 1966. The single reached number six in February 1967.

This was the last song performed at Woodstock in 1969, on Monday, August 18, at about 9 PM. There weren't many attendees left, but Jimi Hendrix delivered a legendary performance.

This track was featured in the film "Forrest Gump" (1994) but wasn't included on the official soundtrack.
