"I Walk The Line" lyrics
"I Walk The Line"
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
Writer(s): Johnny Cash
With this song Johnny Cash promises to remain faithful to his wife, Vivian, while he is on the road.
Johnny Cash said in an interview with the Country Music Foundation, "I wrote the song backstage one night in 1956 in Gladewater, Texas. I was newly married at the time, and I suppose I was laying out my pledge of devotion."
"The tie that binds" is a reference to the Protestant hymn, "Blessed Be the Tie That Binds", about ties between the people in the church.
This song became Johnny Cash's first number-one Billboard hit. The single remained on the charts for over 43 weeks.
The Johnny Cash 2005 biopic film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is called after the title of this track.
Bob Dylan wrote in his autobiography about "I Walk The Line",
"...a song I'd always considered to be up there at the top, one of the most mysterious and revolutionary of all time, a song that makes an attack on your most vulnerable spots, sharp words from a master."
