"Secret Agent Man" was originally written and composed by P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri for the US broadcast of the UK series "Danger Man". The series was known in the USA as "Secret Agent" and aired from 1964 to 1966. Their demo version of this song had the title "Danger Man".

Johnny Rivers initially recorded only a verse and a chorus for being used in the opening titles of the US TV series "Secret Agent". Later, after the song gained a significant popularity, he added two more verses.

The song peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
