With the release of "Love Is Weird" on the 16th of April 2021, Julia Michaels announced his debut album, "Not In Chronological Order". Speaking about how the tracks of the album represent heartbreak and finding new love, Michaels said in a statement, "That's the arc of this album: I'm not bitter about love anymore. I know what functional love is like and being in love and being hesitant about that love because it feels so perfect."

When asked by Zane Love of Apple Music about the story behind this song, Julia Michaels explained that it was written in studio within 30 minutes with Billy Walsh and John Ryan, after Julia had told Billy, "Love is weird." She elaborated, "And then John over in the corner starts playing the guitar and 'love is weird...' And we were like, 'Yeah, we're gonna do that.'" She also added, "Some of my best song are written in a very short amount of time. And I think it's because you're not thinking about it too much, you're just going with your gut. You're going just based of basically some feeling and memory."
