"Payin' Hard" lyrics
"Payin' Hard"
Heaven knows I've had a hell of a time
But like the night gives way to the morning light
There's a pounding in my head again
I'd be lyin if I said I wasn't tired
I can't help but think of Janie and those pretty eyes
Yeah she was sweet as berries on a summer vine
She had a heart of gold, we were burning coals
Hotter than a sidewalk in July
At the expense of my heart
Lord I've cashed in my soul
Chose this old guitar
Before the only love I've known
I gotta live with that
Lose sleep with that
When I close my eyes
I'll die with that, yeah
My life's a credit card
Play now, pay later
And I'm paying hard
Well I've heard it said that moments come and then they pass
And it sure passed me by when I should've saw my dad
But I plugged it in to another town
Swore another chance would come around again
Yeah I plugged it in to another town
Swore another chance would come around again
And now it's gone the kinda gone that don't come back
I only see him now in dreams that I have
I gotta live with that
Lose sleep with that
When I close my eyes
I'll die with that, yeah
My life's a credit card
Play now, pay later
And I'm paying hard
So long my friends I guess this is my farewell
Damn all these pennies swimming in my wishing well
Told every single sorry that I had to tell
I'll live with that
Sleep with that
Make my peace
And I'll die with that, yeah
My life's a credit card
Play now, pay later
And I'm paying hard
And I'll live with that
Sleep with that
Make my peace
And I'll die with that, yeah
I'll live with that
Sleep with that
Make my peace
And I'll die with that, yeah
Kip Moore told about "Payin' Hard" in an interview for Apple Music, "I've carried that regret for years: of how my guitar has been the thing that I've just constantly gone to, and I've neglected all these other important areas of my life—relationships, friendships, these kinds of things that have suffered because of being gone so much. So I think that song was digging up bones, and facing them, and trying to find a way to put it to rest and forgive myself."
"Janie is a real character," Kip Moore told "Taste of Country Nights" in an interview, "I do that a lot with my records. Mary was all over the first one. I'm never gonna tell you who it is but there definitely are characters that will influence records at times and different songs. A lot of this is my way of sometimes releasing whatever bones I might have buried in a natural way and trying to process … the feelings I've had through the years, that way I can move on from it."
