Laufey explained UPROXX the meaning behind this song, '"Goddess' is my most honest song yet. I wrote it alone at my piano after feeling like someone had fallen in love with the version of me they'd seen on stage, just to find that I wasn't what they projected once I was off stage. They deemed me to no longer be a shiny thing when the glamor wore off, reduced to skin and bone." She first performed the song live during her "Bewitched Tour" at a concert in Brussels. The song was officially released on the 6th of March, 2024, as a title track of the deluxe version of her album "Bewitched: The Goddess Edition".

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Laufey said of this track, "It is a funny thing to step on stage and wear beautiful clothing and lots of makeup and stand in front of thousands of fans and be depicted as this goddess, this character. It's quite a high. But then I go home and I am like, 'Whoa'. I'm just alone and I don't feel as much like that goddess. My makeup has leaked off a bit, I feel like my clothes aren't fitting, and I feel not very goddess-like. I feel just more human."
