Jimmy Page said that the basis of this song was created during a jam session, whilst the band were trying to finish the track "Four Sticks". After one of the failed takes John Bonham began to play the drum sequence based on the Little Richard's song "Keep A-Knockin'", and Page added a guitar riff, the most part of which is heard on the song.

The song is one of the best-known songs in the band's repertoire. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics in response to critics who claimed that their previous album "Led Zeppelin III" wasn't really rock 'n' roll.

"The Book of Love", mentioned in this song, was a popular song by The Monotones.
