"One Step Closer" lyrics
"One Step Closer"
[Chester Bennington:]
I cannot take this anymore
Saying everything I've said before
All these words: they make no sense
I find bliss in ignorance
Less I hear the less you'll say
You'll find that out anyway
Just like before...
Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
'Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
I'm about to break
I find the answers aren't so clear
Wish I could find a way to disappear
All these thoughts: they make no sense
I find bliss in ignorance
Nothing seems to go away
Over and over again
Just like before...
Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
'Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
I'm about to break
Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
'Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to... break!
Shut up when I'm talking to you
Shut up, shut up, shut up
Shut up when I'm talking to you
Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I'm about to break!
Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
'Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
I'm about to break
Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
'Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to...
Break!

This song is the debut single of the album and Linkin Park's very first single, too. It is one of their biggest hits which was performed almost at every live show.
The words "I cannot take this anymore" and "Everything you say to me takes me one step closer to the edge" were written out of frustration when the band's producer Don Gilmore kept rejecting this song's lyrics numerous times.
Mike Shinoda told about the recording of this song in an interview for Kerrang! magazine in January 2008, "This was written in my apartment. The music came together quickly but the lyrics took a few tries." During the process an angry neighbor hammered on the wall. Although he couldn't hear the actual music, but was irritated by Chester Bennington screaming into the microphone.
The film "Dracula 2000" featured this song in the end credits.
Linkin Park's remix album "Reanimation" includes a remix of this song entitled "1Stp Klosr".
Korn's lead singer
Jonathan Davis provided vocals for that remix.
