"Forever Half Mast" lyrics
"Forever Half Mast"
I'm takin' back roads all the way back home
Everything I've done, just a little lovely crow
I didn't choose this town, I can't undo it now
I tried to love the beast no matter what it thinks of me
You're worried that you'll go to Hell
For all the lives that you can't save
For all the money that you waste
For all the good you throw away
Yes, you're evil, but you're not that bad
You put out your palm more than the back of your hand
They were wrong when they said forget the past
Let your flag fly at forever half mast
Let your flag fly at forever half mast
We're in a state of disarray united by our darkest days
Achin' from the growing pains, they always say it's just a phase
America, the tried and true, red and white and black and blue
Tell me, who did this to you? If it was me I hardly knew
Yes, you're evil, but you're not that bad
You put out your palm more than the back of your hand
They were wrong when they said forget the past
Let your flag fly at forever half mast
Let your flag fly at forever half mast
Off you run and run for more
Nobody escaped before
Wait for something magical
Mistake turn into miracle

Lucy Dacus said in a statement about this song, "There is a daily dissonance one endures as an American wherein much of our joy is counterweighted by shame, where much of our pride lives in tandem with injustice and suffering. 'Forever Half Mast' is about confronting this unavoidable culpability as an American citizen and consumer. Instead of allowing this guilt to paralyze us, we should try to let it influence us in positive ways."
Bob Boilen from npr.com wrote that Lucy Dacus explained the following about "Forever Half Mast", "I wrote it years ago as an answer to my own question about whether or not any American can be a good person since we are all passively benefiting from one of the most violent and destructive systems in the world. I don't so much believe in the dualistic idea of people either being good or bad anymore, but I still believe the sentiment."
