This song was originally intended for Mike Posner's album "Pages", but that album has never been released, and since Maroon 5 asked for the song, Posner decided to give them the draft version. Posner has later posted a video of himself playing an acoustic rendition of what his version would have sounded like on his Instagram.

The music video for this track shows the footage of the band crashing weddings in Los Angeles, California, and playing "Sugar" for newly-weds and their guests. David Dobkin, director of the video, also directed the film "Wedding Crashers" (2005) which première the band attended in New York.

Michael Jackson's song "Beat It" has a similar chorus structure with an almost-identical syllable count.
