This song was inspired by Adam Levine's break-up with his girlfriend and also by the pressuring from the record label that asked the band for more songs.

Adam Levine explained how his fallen-apart relationship affected the writing process, saying, "She was literally leaving town within days of me writing the lyrics to 'This Love', so I was in prime emotional condition to write a song with that kind of conflict."

The lines about "her appetite" and "coming every night" were explained by Adam Levine in an interview with Rolling Stone, "Yep, that's sexual, all right. ...I thought the more explicit I got without being totally explicit was a nice approach."

The extended version of "This Love" briefly includes the chorus of the band's next single, "She Will Be Loved", in its outro.

Adam Levine's girlfriend at the time, model Kelly McGee, is featuring in the music video for this song.

When The Miami Herald asked Adam Levine to comment on the video for this track in October 2008, he answered, "I don't want to just show a little bit of skin. I want to go for it. ...When people get a little uncomfortable, I have no problem with that."

MTV edited out some words when playing the music video for "This Love". Adam Levine noted, "MTV has now edited the language. They won't let me say 'Keep her coming every night' and they took the 'sinking' out of 'sinking my fingertips'. It's like communist China. It's totally bizarre."

Being the third most played song of 2004, this song is still one of Maroon 5's most successful songs. It won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal in 2006.
