Michael Jackson didn't write this, but his vocals and the harmonies perfectly expressed the mood and spirit of the song.

Songwriter Steve Porcaro, keyboardist of the band Toto and one of the co-authors of this track, said, "I had written the song for my daughter Heather." A boy hit her on the playground. She wanted to know why, but Steve couldn't easily explain that the boy somehow liked her or that it was just human nature. From it the question in the chorus was born: "Why?"

Quincy Jones heard the demo of "Human Nature" by accident upon receiving a cassette with some demo tracks from David Paich, who worked on the "Thriller" album. Steve Porcaro stayed at Paich's place at the time, and David asked him to prepare a tape for Jones one day. Porcaro didn't have a spare cassette, so he recorded David's material on the B-side of "Human Nature" draft. Quincy Jones played both sides and was impressed by "Human Nature".

Miles Davis recorded this song in 1985. Steve Porcaro grew up listening to his songs and he said, "He was my father's hero. My brother Jeff learnt to play drums listening to 'Bag's Groove'. Miles Davis was ingrained in all of us, so I was completely thrilled. I was so honored."
