"Smooth Criminal" lyrics
"Smooth Criminal"
Ow!
Cha!
Shoo-cha-choo-cha!
As he came into the window
Was a sound of a crescendo
He came into her apartment
He left the bloodstains on the carpet
She ran underneath the table
He could see she was unable
So she ran into the bedroom
She was struck down, it was her doom
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
Will you tell us that you're OK
There's a sound at the window
Then he struck you a crescendo, Annie
He came into your apartment
Left the bloodstains on the carpet
And then you ran into the bedroom
You were struck down
It was your doom
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
You've been hit by—
You've been hit by a smooth criminal
Ow!
So they came into the outway
It was Sunday, what a black day
Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
Sounding heartbeats intimidations
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK?
Will you tell us that you're OK
There's a sound at the window
Then he struck you a crescendo, Annie
He came into your apartment
Left the bloodstains on the carpet
And then you ran into the bedroom
You were struck down
It was your doom
Annie, are you OK?
So, Annie, are you OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
You've been hit by—
You've been struck by a smooth criminal
Choo-cha, choo-cha
Ow!
OK, I want everybody to clear the area right now!
Ow!
Hoo!
Hoo!
Hoo!
Hoo!
Ow!
Annie, are you OK?
I don't know!
Will you tell us, that you're OK
I don't know!
There's a sound at the window
I don't know!
That he struck you a crescendo, Annie
I don't know!
He came into your apartment
I don't know!
Left the bloodstains on the carpet
I don't know why baby!
And then you ran into the bedroom (Help me)
You were struck down
It was your doom, Annie! (Dag gone it)
Annie, are you OK?
Dag gone it, baby!
Will you tell us, that you're OK
Dag gone it, baby!
There's a sound at the window
Dag gone it, baby!
Then he struck you a crescendo, Annie (Hoo! Hoo!)
He came into your apartment
Dag gone it!
Left bloodstains on the carpet (Hoo!)
And then you ran into the bedroom (Hoo! Hoo!)
Dag gone it!
You were struck down
It was your doom, Annie!
Ow!
Ow!
Shoo-cha-choo, shoo-cha-choo!
Ow!
Ow!

"Smooth Criminal" was created from the beginning as a pure video song. In 1984 Michael Jackson had an idea of a western musical with him as a gunslinger.
This song tells the fictional story of a gangster. The original demo was recorded under the title of "Al Capone" in 1986 (which was later released on "Bad 25" album). During the performance of the song on The HIStory tour (1996-1997) Michael Jackson was dressed like a 1930s Chicago gangster.
The refrain "Annie, are you OK?" was inspired by so-called Resusci Anne, a dummy used in CPR training.
The
music video for this song was partly inspired by Fred Astaire's "Girl Hunt Ballet" dance number from the film "The Band Wagon" (1953). Michael Jackson wears a similar white suit and a fedora. Astaire's choreographer Hermes Pan visited the set of the video and said that Fred would have been very happy and proud of being copied by such a wonderful person.
The most famous moment of the
music video for this track is the lean when it seems that Michael Jackson and the back-up dancers defy gravity by holding their bodies at the 45 degrees angle standing on the floor.
The music video for "Smooth Criminal" won Best Music Video at the 1989 Brit Awards and the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Music Video" in 1989.
Colin Chilvers directed the "Moonwalk" film, part of which is "Smooth Criminal" segment. Chilvers was inspired by the golden age of Hollywood, and he showed Michael Jackson the film "The Third Man" (1949) as an example of the theme he thought to have on the video.
