This song's lyrics raised allegations of antisemitism, and Michael Jackson had to apologise and re-record the song with altered lyrics.

Because of controversial nature of the lyrics, the US radio stations played this track unwillingly. Thus it reached only number 30 position on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, whereas it became a top-ten hit in almost all European countries and even climbed to number one in Germany.

The first music video for "They Don't Care About Us" was made in two places of Brazil: in the historic city center of Salvador and in a favela of Rio de Janeiro called Dona Marta, where the residents were happy to see Michael Jackson and hoped that their problems would be revealed to the world.

State authorities of Rio de Janeiro wanted to ban filming of a video for this song, because they were afraid that images of poverty might scare away tourists. Official said that Michael Jackson exploited the poor.

Michael Jackson's production team had to negotiate with drug dealers in order to gain permission to shoot a video for the song in one of Rio de Janeiro's favelas.

The second music video for this song was shot in a prison and showed multiple references to human rights abuses, including real footage of riots, protests etc. Michael Jackson made a second video for a song for the first time in his career.
