"Song For Mum" lyrics

I was all of five years old with a Ninja Turtle backpack
Three-foot-nine and bulletproof with the world out there to see
She was smiling through her tears and, man, I'd never seen her like that
The longest hug we'd ever had, so I kissed her on the cheek

And I said, "Let's not say goodbye, let's say 'I'll see you soon'
Now dry your eyes, you know where I'm going to
It's only down the road, I'll be back after school
Oh, let's not say goodbye, let's say 'I'll see you soon'"

I'll see you soon

I was all of nineteen in an old Toyota van
And all I had was a tank of gas and a Gibson shotgun seat
It wasn't work, it wasn't college, no, she didn't understand
She thought this dream that I was chasing meant that she was losing me

So I said, "Let's not say goodbye, let's say 'I'll see you soon'
Now dry your eyes, you know where I'm going to
It's only 'round the world, just be a month or two
Oh, let's not say goodbye, let's say 'I'll see you soon'"

And days turn into years, and years make up a life
And you do what you can to come home for Christmas
Then before you know, a heart runs out of time
And you drop everything to be there by her side
Now the tears are in my eyes as she says

"Let's not say goodbye, let's say 'I'll see you soon'
Son, dry your eyes, you know where I'm going to
And I know someday you'll be up there with me too
Oh, let's not say goodbye, mm
Let's say 'I'll see you soon'"

I'll see you soon
