This song represents the last message on the album from the character Dr. Death-Defying.
Gerard Way, the frontman of the band, explained to Billboard, "On 'Goodnite, Dr. Death', Dr. Death signs off, plays you the National Anthem and a blast of sound just before we get our big end credit."
The words "Your shadow lives on without you" is a reference to the afterlife concept in "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys" comic-book series by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon.
The American national anthem playing at the end of this track reminds of the US TV channels in the 90s: they ended their broadcast late at night with it. The channels went static after playing the anthem just like this song ends the Dr. Death's message.
