This song was inspired by the death of Gerard Way's grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. The song and the whole album is dedicated to her.

During their Warped Tour in 2005, Gerard Way introduced "Helena" as the most important song to him and his band.

The band decided to add a tribute to the late Gerard Way's grandmother, because it was her who taught him how to sing. He said, "I don't know if it fits, but I know that's how we had to make the record. And it's one of those things you just hope works in the end. And actually, the record works so much more on a personal level not only for us but also for the people who listen to it."

The music video for this track features a white van that was given to Gerard Way by his grandmother.
