"Child Again" lyrics

"Child Again"

Yeah, I know too much, I think I know my way around
Too smart to feel a heartbreak now, too old to let my safeguards down
And where'd the wonder go? Traded magic for a measured hope
Traded dreamin' for a worn out road, I'm tired of bein' in control

And it calls me to light in the by and by
I wanna see your heart in my younger eyes
I wanna hear your voice in the rain and wind
I wanna know it's safe to be a child again

I know that getting hurt is really how redemption works
My ego is a ball and chain, my instincts only make it worse
In the morning light I don't wanna run from pain
No, I can't afford to cheapen grace
Know the pain just means my soul's awake

And it calls me to light in the by and by
I wanna see your heart in my younger eyes
I wanna hear your voice in the rain and wind
I wanna know it's safe to be a child again

Well, let my past mean nothing, make it powerless
I am free like a river, I am free like a river
All my hope unbroken, you're my innocence
I am free like a river, I'm a child again

Let my past mean nothing, make it powerless
I am free like a river, I am free like a river
All my hope unbroken, you're my innocence
I am free like a river, I'm a child again

And it calls me to light in the by and by
I wanna see your heart in my younger eyes
I wanna hear your voice in the rain and wind
I wanna know it's safe to be a child again

Seth Bolt of NEEDTOBREATHE told the following about "Child Again" during the band's introduction of their album "Out Of Body" published in June 2020, "The song is about—you know—innocence and—like—wanting to get that back. And I've just been going through a lot and I was missing that. Missing that feeling of innocence. Just the idea of being able to—to go somewhere—you know—and get that back or experience something that reconnects you with the innocence when you were a child."
NEEDTOBREATHE shared the following about this song on Facebook on the 27th of August 2020, "'Child Again' is track 5 on the album, and might be our favorite. It's about the story that we all have in common. As we grow up and adapt to survive, the armor we build in the process can prevent us from being vulnerable and open to receiving love. Here's to still finding wonderment in the smallest of things, knowing what it's like to be a child again."
