"Don't Know Why" lyrics

"Don't Know Why"

I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

This song was originally written and recorded by Jesse Harris, who released it under the name Jesse Harris and The Ferdinandos in 1999. Harris later joined Norah Jones' band and offered her the song to be recorded with female vocals. Her version won her a record deal with Blue Note Records.
"Don't Know Why" was recorded in one take in October 2000. Sound engineer Jay Newland thought it was good enough and didn't let Norah Jones and her band to try more takes. Producer Arif Mardin used the take as the original demo and added guitars and vocal harmony to make the song sound as if Jones was harmonizing with herself.
In 2003, this track won at the Grammys for "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year", while the album won "Best Pop Vocal" and "Best Engineering". Norah Jones also won "Best New Artist" and performed "Don't Know Why" on the show.
