The melody of this song is based on The Rolling Stones' song "Shine A Light". Noel Gallagher wrote it before he joined Oasis while working for a building company in his hometown of Manchester.

This song helped the band get a record deal with Creation Records because it impressed its director Alan McGee. He said, "It was probably the single greatest moment I've ever experienced with them".

This single's cover image was a photo of John Lennon's childhood home, Mendips, taken by a photographer Michael Spencer Jones.

Noel Gallagher said about this song in 2011, "With every song that I write, I compare it to The Beatles. I've got semi-close once or twice, with 'Live Forever', for example… the solo on that is one of the greatest things in rock music."
