"Mr. Crowley" lyrics

"Mr. Crowley"

[Daisley - Osbourne - Rhoads]

Mr. Crowley, what went on in your head?
Oh, Mr. Crowley, did you talk to the dead?
Your life style to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magic
Yeah, you waited on Satan's call

Mr. Charming, did you think you were pure?
Mr. Alarming, in nocturnal rapport
Uncovering things that were sacred
Manifest on this Earth
Conceived in the eye of a secret
And they scattered the afterbirth

Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse?
Mr. Crowley, it's symbolic, of course
Approaching a time that is classic
I hear that maidens call
Approaching a time that is drastic
Standing with their backs to the wall

Was it polemically sent
l want to know what you meant
I want to know, I want to know what you meant, yeah

Ozzy Osbourne told about "Mr. Crowley" in an interview for Rolling Stone, "The reason I did 'Mr. Crowley' on my first solo album was that everybody was talking about Aleister Crowley. Jimmy Page bought his house, and one of my roadies worked with one of his roadies. I thought, 'Mr. Crowley, who are you? Where are you from?' But people would hear the song and go, 'He's definitely into witchcraft.'"
This song was inspired by a book about Aleister Crowley which Ozzy Osbourne had read. He wrote in the liner notes for "The Ozzman Cometh", "I'd read several books about Aleister Crowley. He was a very weird guy and I always wanted to write a song about him. While we were recording the Blizzard of Ozz album there was a pack of tarot cards he had designed lying around the studio. Well one thing lead to another and the song 'Mr. Crowley' was born."
The guitar solo by Randy Rhoads on this song is one of the most-known in heavy metal.
