"Folkin' Around" lyrics
"Folkin' Around"
Allow me to exaggerate a memory or two
Where summers lasted longer than, longer than we do
When nothing really mattered except for me to be with you
But in time, we all forgot and we all grew
Your melody sounds as sweet as the first time it was sung
With a little bit more character for show
And by the time your father's heard of all the wrong you've done
Then I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home
If I'd forgotten how to sing before I'd sung this song
I'll write it all across the wall before my job is done
And I'll even have the courtesy of admitting I was wrong
As the final words before I'm dead and gone
You've never been so divine in accepting your defeat
And I've never been more scared to be alone
If love is not enough to put my enemies to sleep
Then I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home

One of two song written by Brendon Urie for the album. Guitarist Ryan Ross said to VH1, "I really like that song from a lyrical standpoint. I didn't really get it the first two times. Once I paid attention to the first line, the part that says, 'Allow me to exaggerate a memory or two,' after that I was like, 'Oh, all these lyrics are cliché on purpose. And then it totally made sense. He outsmarted me." Urie added, "It was supposed to be just a really simple number with words that are easily associated but not difficult. Very classic, nostalgic words."
Brendon Urie explained the line "Then I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home" in an interview with Coup de Main, "That line is 'I don't want to use hate against people that hate, that is just going to fuel it. I refuse to turn into what those people are, and so if I can't defeat my enemies with love, I would just give up at that point. Luckily it hasn't come to that, love will always prevail and I do believe that'. That's a roundabout way of saying 'love will always trump hate'."
