"Blackbird" lyrics
"Blackbird"
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird fly blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Thank you
Writer(s): Paul McCartney, John Lennon
Paul McCartney has given differing statements regarding his inspiration for the song and its meaning. Once he has said he was inspired by hearing the call of a blackbird one morning when The Beatles were studying Meditation in India. Another time, he recalls writing it as a response to racial tensions escalating in the United States during the spring of 1968.
The guitar accompaniment for the song was inspired by a well-known Johann Sebastian Bach's classical lute piece "Bourrée in E minor".
"Blackbird" is one of the most famous fingerstyle tunes, the song novice guitar players often try to learn. The fingerpicking technique that McCartney uses in the song was taught to him by folk singer
Donovan.
