"Spike Island" lyrics

"Spike Island"

Something stopped me
Dead in my tracks
I was heading for disaster
And then I turned back

I was wrestling with a coat-hanger
Can you guess who won?
The Universe shrugged
Shrugged then moved on

It's a guess
No idea
It's a feeling
Not a voice
In my head
Just a feeling

And by the way
Spike Island
Come alive
And by the way
This time I'll get it right
Oh

Not a shaman or a showman
Ashamed that I was selling the rights
I took a breather
And decided not to ruin my life

I was conforming to a cosmic design
I was playing to type
Until I walked back to the Garden
Of Earthly Delights

I was born
To perform
It's a calling
I exist
To do this
Shouting and pointing

And by the way
Spike Island
Come alive
And by the way
This time I'll get it right
Oh

No-one will ever understand it
And no-one will ever have the last word
Because it's not something you could ever say
So swivel

It's a guess
No idea
It's a feeling
Not a voice
In my head
Just a feeling

And by the way
Spike Island
Come alive
And by the way
This time I'll get it right
Oh

And by the way
Spike Island
Come alive
And by the way
This time I'll get it right
Oh

"Spike Island" is the first single from Pulp's album "More", their first new music in 24 years. The song and its music video were published on the 10th of April, 2025. The video was directed by Jarvis Cocker himself with the help of computer artificial intelligence. He explained, "The weekend I began work on the video was a strange time: I went out of the house & kept expecting weird transformations of the surrounding environment due to the images the computer had been generating. The experience had marked me. I don't know whether I've recovered yet."
This song derives its title from the famous venue for an open-air Stone Roses concert in 1990. Pulp's guitarist Mark Webber attended that concert and told about it on BBC Radio 6 Music, "There was a lot of anticipation, but it didn't sound very good. It was windy and the vibe wasn't there."
Pulp debuted "Spike Island" live at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom in September of 2024. Jarvis Cocker said, "We did play one new song towards the end of the tour, and nobody threw things at us, or left to go to the bar. So we just thought we'd carry on and see what we could conjure up."
