Puma Blue explained the following about "Velvet Leaves" on Facebook on the 15th of September 2020, "I wrote this song very quickly one day last year, but it took much longer to process what I was trying to say. 5 years ago, my sister was in a really bad place and one day we nearly lost her. By the grace of the universe she survived, and now words can't communicate how proud I am of the strong, beautiful, wise woman she is. This song is just a reflection on that day, how much I love her, about how we came together as a family, about the veil between death and life and about the toxic masculinity that had a hold of me when I couldn't or wouldn't express myself at the time."

This song's music video was described by Puma Blue as such, "The video is a small tribute to my sister in the form of a retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, inspired by Jean Cocteau's 1950 adaptation and directed by the wonderful Harvey Pearson."
