Rick James told about composing "Super Freak" released on the 7th of April, 1981, in a 1983 interview with Musician magazine, "I was in the studio and everything else for the album was done. I just put 'Super Freak' together really quickly. I wanted a silly song that had a bit of new-wave texture to it. So, I just came up with this silly little lick and expounded on it. I came up with the bass part first. Then I put a guitar on it and keyboards, doing the 'ehh ehh' silly keyboard part." James co-wrote the song with Alonzo Miller.

This track features background vocals by "The Temptations" hence the line "Temptations, sing!".

"Super Freak" was nominated for "Best Male Rock Vocal Performance" at the 1982 Grammy awards.

MC Hammer sampled the riff of this track in his "U Can't Touch This" in 1990. So as did the Black Eyed Peas in 2020, and Nicki Minaj in 2022 ("Super Freaky Girl").
