"Simple (You Wouldn't Call It Simple)" lyrics

"Simple (You Wouldn't Call It Simple)"

It's an unusual morning, grey clouds rolling in
A red-letter warning, there's menace in the wind
Can't change the weather, can't change your luck
Can't live forever, can't pass the buck
To lead with an open mind and love with an open heart
In the best and the worst of times, like as not you'll come up short

Simple, you try to keep it simple, face up to each brand-new day
Make the most of come what may
It's simple even when the worst is yet to come
The very thing I'm running from stands in the way

Last night the stars were out, the moon stayed at home
Frostbite and stillness gave life to the gloam
A hound dog was barking way off to the east
The natural conclusion of a moveable feast
Smoke from the chimney, a grey shade of blue
Rose up like a genie and vanished just like you

It's simple though you wouldn't call it simple
3am comes rolling round, love's the verb and you're the noun
It's simple, you can pray to whom it may concern, when you get no answer in return
You've got to lay that burden down

Was time ever on my side, as far as I can tell
The minutes and hours and nights I spent in my own private hell
Might've made me a better man, but I can't say just how
If I don't see the difference between then and now
I don't want to be young again, it goes by so fast
I live more in the moment now and less in the past

Simple isn't all that simple, it's just another metaphor
Like storms that rage outside your door
Simple, you play the cards, you roll the dice, and in the end you don't think twice
Need I say more
