"The Ballad Of Artemis And Orion" lyrics

"The Ballad Of Artemis And Orion"

Artemis was her father's daughter, she wore the old man down
She willed herself down off the mount and searched the whole world round
She wandered through the forest dark and lied to her own kind
What she learned from leaving home was nothing stays behind
She sought the ways of wisdom in the solitude she kept
Swore no man could claim her from the dirt bed where she slept
For he who seeks the highest truth has done so from the start
And those who wish to know themselves must follow their own heart

A hundred trillion years could pass and still the stars could shine
Or be gone in sixty seconds if someday they change their mind
It's laid out in the future and the past is in a huff
The journey in and of itself has never been enough

Orion had charisma and he smelled like human waste
Goat tar-tar and bone meal were the staples of his taste
His beard was black and flaming and his eyes were bloody red
His arrows flew like birds of prey, he was a god they said
Serious was the dog that made all other dogs look tame
Allegiance to your master was his mother's maiden name
Orion took his faithful friend forever as his own
Together they went off in search of goat and marrow bone

Artemis and Orion weren't a match made in the sky
He stumbled into her world with a patch over his eye
He kicked her dogs and spooked her horse and killed her goats galore
Raped her without passion and proceeded hence to snore
Artemis lay there thinking that she might as well be dead
She killed him without blinking with a scorpion instead
She buried him beside the sea beneath the mossy mound
And news of what had come to be was quickly spread around

Orion did some hard time in the lower rungs of Hell
Until the gods took pity and put up his cosmic bell
He took his place among the stars of winter, summer, spring
But not so come November when the Scorpio is king

A hundred trillion years could pass and still the stars could shine
Or be gone in sixty seconds if someday they change their mind
It's laid out in the future and the past is looking rough
The journey in and of itself has never been enough
