Being the opening song on Rosé's debut album, "Rosie", "Number One Girl" was inspired by how Rosé was being seen by the public. She explained, "I had been on the internet 'til like 5 AM. I couldn't sleep because I was so obsessed with what these people were gonna say about me and what I wanted them to say about me. I was so disgusted at myself for it – I never wanted to admit it to anyone. I didn't even want to admit it to myself. But I had to be fully honest in the studio." The song was published on the 22nd of November, 2024, accompanied by the music video directed by Rosé herself.

Rosé told Paper Magazine that this song was "so disgustingly vulnerable and honest" because she wanted listeners to learn that she was "a person that goes through these emotions". She clarified further, "If anything, it's something I want to cover up. Even in interviews, I'm like nothing really fazes me. You know? But it does. Every word, every comment, it crushes me."
