"GROWING UP IS ____", released on the 8th of December, 2021, is Ruel's first new music since the release of his EP "Bright Lights, Red Eyes" in 2020. He told about the song in the comments on its live video, "IT'S OUT!! GROWING UP IS ___ is yours now. so insanely psyched to be putting out new music again!"

Ruel described this track in a press release as being an "ode to the messy, complicated, yet ultimately exhilarating rites of passage we all traverse while growing up". He also revealed, "The idea of the underline at the end of the title was to try to explain that everyone has a different experience growing up. Everyone has ups and downs, but because it's never just one thing, I couldn't just give it one word and wanted to leave it open for interpretation."
