'Real Thing' is the third single from his EP 'Free Time'. The song was performed by Ruel during his tour in March 2019.

This song was inspired by the film 'High Fidelity'. Ruel said about it in an interview with Coup de Main in August 2019, "I was watching it with my family and I just loved it so much. I thought the concept was really cool and how towards the end, the main scene with him just being sick of fantasising about people..."

Upon the release of this track, Ruel posted on Twitter a video of himself with the message part of which read "real thing has just dropped in the us, so come celebrate with me at my popup shop in LA tomorrow..."
