Set It Off teased this track with a TikTok video posted on the 22nd of March, 2023, two days before the release of the single. The video showed a guy pouring some gasoline on himself and firing up a gas lighter in his hand. The caption simply said, "'PUNCHING BAG' OUT 3/24." One day prior to the release, the band posted a video clip with the fans on the street and played a fragment of the song. The video said, "Playing our unreleased song for fans." The song was exclusively premiered on SiriusXM Octane on the 23rd of March, 2023.

Upon the release of this track, the band shared the following explanation on Instagram, "'Punching Bag' is the first independent single of Set If Off. No label, no big machine, just us having fun and doing what we love. We poured our hearts into this and we hope you are obsessed with it." Set It Off left Fearless Records and went independent earlier in 2023.
