"The Buddha On The Lawn" lyrics

"The Buddha On The Lawn"

Way back in the nineteen hundreds, there was a happier time
That people used to call the seventies
Our dad was the man, and it seemed it was his plan
To fill our yard with curiosities

It started with a gnome he brought back to our home
But soon, it got a little out of hand
There finally came a day when our mother took a stand
And this is what our daddy had to say

You can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn?
The gnome can go, even though it pains me to my soul
You can scorn the unicorn, the Dutch boy, and the fawn
It's getting crowded in our yard, I know it's getting hard
To find a space to place a chaise lounge on
You can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn

Mom was a giving woman, she truly loved our dad
But one day, she had had all that she could have
Next door, the Joneses had a hot tub and a pool
In the place where our yard had a Bambi dressed in plaid

Mom kept it civil, it never turned into a fight
Discussions went on all the day and night
Dad was bound for disappointment
Yeah, this is how his point went
Yes, this is how our dad expressed his plight

You can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn?
The gnome can go, even though it pains me to my soul
You can scorn the unicorn, the Dutch boy, and the fawn
It's getting crowded in our yard, I know it's getting hard
To find a space to place a chaise lounge on
You can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn

I took out a great big loan, I got a big yard of my own
And there it is around the pretty place that I call home
But now I have some strife and in all of my sweet life
I never thought that I'd be here saying all these sad words to my wife

Mama, you can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn?
The gnome can go, even though it hurts me to my soul
You can scorn the unicorn, the Dutch boy, and the fawn
It's getting crowded in our yard, I know it's getting hard
To find a space to place a chaise lounge on
But you can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn

You can bring the pink flamingo in from the driveway
But won't you leave the Buddha on the lawn
