"When Times Were Hard" lyrics

"When Times Were Hard"

I was raised on the edge of the country
A gravel road and a seven-acre farm
Mama and my dad gave us everything they had
They never let us know that times were hard

The winter wind would blow right through the windows
A wood stove and a quilt would keep us warm
In the middle of the night, we'd all hold each other tight
They never let us know that times were hard

I truly did believe we had everything we needed
It might not have been the best, but it was ours
Now that I am grown, I know I was not wrong
Every night I thank my lucky stars
They never let us know that times were hard

Now we live on the edge of the city
Just outside the limits of our credit cards
And the children, all they know is me
And mama love them so
And when I see 'em laughing in the yard
There's no way that I can say that times are hard

I truly do believe we have everything we need
It might not be the best, but it's ours
And someday when they're grown
And they have children of their own
They'll understand how rich they really are
It doesn't mean you're poor 'cause times are hard

And someday when I'm old
I'll take 'em down that gravel road
And tell 'em 'bout that seven-acre farm
And hold my children's children in my arms
And tell 'em just how good it is when times are hard
