"Pay Your Way In Pain" lyrics

"Pay Your Way In Pain"

Whoa-oh
You got to pay your way in pain
You got to pray your way in shame

Ooh, I went to the store, I was feeling kinda hungry
But I didn't have the money and the shelves were all empty
So I went to the bank to ch-ch-check my checking
The man looked at my face, said, "We don't have a record"

Oh no, you thought we had forgotten
The show is only getting started
The road is feeling like a pothole
Sit down, stand up, head down, hands up and

Pay your way in pain
You got to pray your way in shame

Give me what I want
(What do you want, what do you want?)
You know what I want
(What do you want, what do you want?)
You know what I want
(What do you want, what do you want?) You relax baby
I, I, I wanna be loved

(Pain, shame)
(Pray, shame)

So I went to the park just to watch the little children
The mothers saw my heels and they said I wasn't welcome
So I, I went back home, I was feeling kinda queazy
But all the locks were changed, my baby wouldn't see me

Oh no, you put your finger on it
The stove is only gettin' hotter
The sun is gotta, gotta melt you
Stand up, sit down, hands up, break down

(What do you want, what do you want?)
You know what I want
(What do you want, what do you want?)
I wanna be loved (What do you want, what do you want?) (Shame)
(What do you want, what do you want?)
I wanna be loved (What do you want, what do you want?) (Shame)

"Pay Your Way In Pain" is the lead single from St. Vincent's sixth studio album "Daddy's Home". The song was premiered on March 5, 2021, accompanied by a music video inspired by the style of the 70s. The visuals were directed by Bill Benz, who also worked on Annie Clark and Carrie Brownstein's film "The Nowhere Inn".
This song was teased by a video snippet and a telephone number—1(833)-77-DADDY—calling which offered a preview of the single and the voice saying that Annie Clark (St. Vincent) would return "in a new role like you've never seen her before".
"I feel like we live in a world where we're often asked to choose between surviving and dignity," Annie Clark told NME about the meaning of "Pay Your Way In Pain". "Part of it is like blues for 2021. It's also about how there's nothing that I've done in my life that didn't involve some sort of struggle. Some of those struggles are really worthy ones to have and something great can come of them."
