The song was inspired by artists such as Lead Belly and Big Bill Broonzy.

Van Halen released a cover of "You Really Got Me" for their 1978 debut album, "Van Halen", but they was playing the song live for years before its studio release.

Barry Brandt from the band Angel saw a demo of this song, when Eddie Van Halen was bragging about some new material. The next day Van Halen got to know that Angel was going to record their own cover version. So, Van Halen had to rush in order to release this song as a single.
