"Moondance" started as a jazz saxophone instrumental, and Van Morrison played that original sax solo he wrote for the song. He has commented, "With 'Moondance' I wrote the melody first. I played the melody on a soprano sax and I knew I had a song so I wrote lyrics to go with the melody. That's the way I wrote that one.

Jeff Labes, pianist and organist, recalled the recording of the track to Uncut, "The first time we recorded it, it came out really well, but Van thought there must be a catch. So we did it about a dozen times, and ended up going back to the first one. He liked to sing live along with the track, because Sinatra did that. He loved having a first-take vocal. He was looking for the magic."

"Moondance" is the most-frequently played song by Van Morrison in concerts. It had been performed in over 1000 gigs.

This song plays in the sex scene in the film "An American Werewolf in London" (1981).

Van Morrison commented on covers of this song by saying, "Quite a number of people have recorded 'Moondance'. There are some great versions including Bobby McFerrin's. I also like a version of 'Moondance' that was done by Grady Tate years ago."
