"Good Dogs" lyrics

"Good Dogs"

He was staring at that pile of dirt
Shovel in his hand
And as he wipes a tear off on his shirt
I wonder if he understands
As losses go this was his first
Put her favorite ball right next to her
Said she might need something to chase
Whenever she gets to the next place

And then he asked me something
I didn't have an answer for
Just another thing on my list
For the day I meet the Lord

Like how come sometimes the good ones
Get dealt the hardest roads
And why do we wait 'til it's to late
To see the things that matter most
and why does the grass look greener
'Til you're on the other side
Why can't we know the best parts
'Til the end of the ride

And I'd ask him what's so good about goodbye
And where do good dogs go when they die

I guess that's just how it goes
you're thinking you'll know it all when you're older
But as time keeps passing through
I just find more that I wish I knew

Like why we think tomorrow
Has more living that today
And then we hold so tight to the good old days
That the new ones slip away
And why do some prayers go unanswered
Right when we need them so bad
Why do we spend life searching for what we already have

And I'd ask him what's so good about goodbye
And where do good dogs go when they die

You know I try to read the good book, but it ain't always so clear
And I know sometimes those answers come in ways that we can't hear
Maybe he gave us one of them
When he made us man's best friend
To live a little more now, a little less then
And be a little more like them

Be a little more like them

I said, "It's gonna hurt a little while
But it slowly fades away
And there might be a chance that we'll see her again someday."
He said, "Dad, how could they call it 'paradise'
If it ain't where the good dogs go when they die?"
