"Lies" lyrics

"Lies"

Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie

I wrote a song about bein' broke
It kinda started out as a joke
I didn't go to college, what would I know
About student loans?
Just wanted you all to relate to me
Most of my songs aren't true
I faked heartbreak I didn't go through
Even when I told you I've never been in love
I already was
Just wanted you all to relate to me

I don't mean to mislead you, I promise
So uncomfortable bein' dishonest, ah-ah
And I think I just realized I would say anything
To come off a little more interesting

That's why I tell
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie

I'd rather tell myself if I ignore
These thoughts they'll go away
And my toxic friends have changed
Truth is I hate confrontation
Deal with it tomorrow
'Cause there's nothing I can do
That's my favorite excuse
Feeding my procrastination

I'll be happy when I've had success
Is that my way to admit I'm depressed?
My therapy's retail, if it's on sale
I pay the price and call that happiness, ah-ah

And I think I just realized I would do anything
To keep hiding the pain I've been burying

That's why I tell
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie

Over and over, I keep on repeatin'
Until it all sounds like the truth to me, and
I cover them up like I'm puttin' out fires
The last thing I want is for you to think I'm a liar

That's why I tell
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie

That's why I tell
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies

(I don't mean to mislead you, I promise)
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
(I promise, I promise, I promise, I promise)
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
(So uncomfortable being dishonest)
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
(Dishonest, dishonest, dishonest, dishonest)
Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies

"I didn't go to college, what would I know about student loans" is a reference to Will Jay's 2018 song "Broke" where he sings "Spendin' all this paper on student loans".
In the description of this song's music video on YouTube, Will Jay explained, "This is a song about the lies I've told everyone in my life, and the even bigger lies I've told myself."
