John Lennon called this song "a little piece of art work". Both Lennon and Paul McCartney considered it one of the band's most beautiful songs.

After John Lennon had written his book "In His Own Write", his was asked by an English journalist and writer Kenneth Allsop, "Why don't you put some of the way you write in the book, as it were, in the songs? Or why don't you put something about your childhood into the songs?" That remark inspired Lennon to write a song about people from his childhood and his younger years. Later he said in a 1980 interview that it was his "first real major piece of work" because for the first time he wrote personal lyrics about his own life.

George Martin—The Beatles' producer—played the piano solo which was created by speeding up the normal playing.

Rod Stewart covered this song for his album "Every Beat of My Heart" (1986).

The Rolling Stone magazine placed this song on the 23rd position on its list The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"In My Life" was played at the funeral of Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). The Beatles had a great musical influence on him.
