Paul McCartney admitted in interviews that he and John Lennon smoked marijuana before setting down to write the lyrics for this song, although it's not only widened their imagination, but also hindered them in a way. He said, "We smoked a bit of pot, then we wrote out a multicolored lyric sheet, the first time we'd ever done that. It was a very seldom case when the drug usage for creating a song was really confirmed by the authors.

This song marked a turning point in The Beatles songwriting when they began to sing about love in a conceptual meaning, opposite to their early songs where love was a part of man-woman relationships. John Lennon said, "It sort of dawned on me that love was the answer, when I was younger, on the Rubber Soul album."
